My Birthday!

As I mentioned in my previous post, I turned 23 this past Tuesday.  My mom, being the wonderful person that she is, always makes a huge deal out of birthdays and is steeped in tradition.  Every year I awake to a stuffed animal and a balloon.  And yes, I am in my 20s.

This year's balloon was adorable, as usual, but she really outdid herself with the stuffed animal.  Sooooooo cute.  It's a little bunny holding a carrot.  I named the bunny Beatrice.

Beatrice was my constant companion throughout the day.  She rode with me to yoga (buckled up, naturally) and sat with me at lunch.

I had a great lunch, by the way:  a collard green wrap (which I'm obsessed with, as of late), grapefruit (also obsessed with) and Amande peach yogurt (dits).  The food, coupled with great TV-watching (Up All Night--hilarious!) made for a fantastic birthday lunch.  I could not have asked for a better way to spend my birthday.

Not the clearest photo but I wanted to capture a screen shot of Up All Night!

Everything I got for my birthday was food-related, which was awesome.  I got two of Isa Chandra Moskowitz's cookbooks (Vegan With A Vengeance and Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar), a box of Maple Nut Clif Bars, a cooking album/binder for my recipes, really nice Good Grips storage containers and...a DEHYDRATOR!!!!!  I was THRILLED.  I've been wanting a dehydrator so badly but they are quite pricey (the good ones are, at least).  I christened my Excalibur by making chewy lemon cashew cookies.  They turned out great!  Tomorrow I hope to make some dehydrated nut bread.

 My lemon cashew cookies, pre-dehydrated.

For my birthday cake, I chose a chocolate cake with buttercream frosting and oh boy, did my mom deliver.  Words literally cannot describe how supreme this cake was.  I kid you not when I say that as of 9:00 last night, there is none left.

You do the math, folks.  Over the course of four days--Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday--I ate a cake.  That's like a quarter of a cake a day.  My mom played a very little part in helping me to eat it.  Like, she maybe had 1/5 of it, but that's a generous guess.  It likely was not even that much.

 Awwwww...

Because Inn Season Cafe is an alcohol-free establishment, my mom and I got our nightly buzz in the form of champagne, which we had with our cake!

I'm seriously sad that this is gone.  I thought that last night I was doing myself a favor when I finished it because then I would no longer be tempted by it, but now I'm just sad.

  1. Tis a sad thing when cake is gone:D lol I am addicted to The Chicago Diners cakes, my favorite being their vegan PB and Chocolate cake. I am happy to hear and see that you had a wonderful birthday. You are a year older then me and my birthday was on the 5th of Feb.

  2. I tried the Raspberry Amande yogurt and it is to die for. I didn't care for the cherry and I love the strawberry. The next ones I need to try are the peach and the coconut. She also makes a vanilla. Not a fan of blueberry right now but I am sure that one is great.

  4. Thank you! As for the Amande yogurt, I really like the peach! I have not even SEEN raspberry or coconut but I do know that my Whole Foods carries strawberry, although it's usually out of stock (I just see the little tag of where it WOULD be).

    1. I will have to try the peach then. Whole foods tends to be out of the strawberry a lot because it is so yummy. The raspberry has to be my favorite though. I buy the raspberry at hillers market in ann arbor.

    2. My WF just got the strawberry! I didn't get it though because I thought I remembered you saying you didn't like it...lol. I got a blueberry to try though! Next time I'm in there I'll pick up a strawberry too!

  5. I meant to ask you, Veronica, where did you have a Chicago Diners Cake? Is it a bakery in Chicago? I haven't even heard of them!

    1. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, things have not been so great. Both of the whole foods market in ann arbor sells them by the slice or you can buy a whole cake. They have cocoa mousse, PB and chocolate, cookies and cream, and carrot cake. They are all so delicious. The bakery itself is in Chicago.

  6. That's okay!! Sometimes it takes me a while to respond too. I hope things are better with you!
Anyway, I checked at my WF the other day and they do not carry the Chicago Diners Cakes :( Neither whole nor by the slice :( I was sorely disappointed. Along with my Hilary's Cookies, I will have to stock up on cake the next time I venture SW to Ann Arbor! Should I try the PB first, do you think?

    1. They have not had the PB one for a while now which makes me sad but they always have the other three flavors. I think it really depends on what you like better, chocolate or vanilla?
